It’s that time again! Time for the monthly writing prompts for kids. Here are some ideas to get the creativity flowing from young and old alike. Have fun and remember, the sky’s the limit.

  1. Create a new May Day tradition. What does it involve and what does it mean to you?
  2. Come up with a character of any kind. Human, animal, monster, doesn’t matter.  Guess what? Today’s that character’s birthday! How does s/he celebrate?
  3. You discovered a new plant. Describe it and talk about what you would name it and why.
  4. Describe a spring scene and put one of your favorite book characters in it. What happens?
  5. Invent a new color. Name it and describe it. What are people’s reactions to it?
  6. What is the worst food you’ve ever eaten? Describe it in all the gory details. Try to be as descriptive as possible using all five senses.
  7. What would happen if your dreams started coming true?
  8. Aunt Lisa and Uncle Frank are back again for another visit. This time they arrived by hot air balloon. You sneak on board for a ride. Describe your adventure.
  9. You’re an astronaut traveling through space hundreds of years in the future. You’ve discovered a new planet. Will you explore it? Write about what you would do.
  10. You’re out fishing with your best friend.  All of a sudden a fish jumps out of the water and starts talking to you. What do you do?
  11. New neighbors just moved into the creepy house down the street. Tell a story about this.
  12. The Pony Express is back in town! All mail is now delivered by horseback and you’re on the job. Talk about your adventure.
  13. If you could have any pet in the world, what would it be?
  14. You and your friends are playing ball. One of them hits the ball and you go to catch it.  When you catch it, the ball keeps flying even though it’s in your hand. What adventure do you have?
  15. When you woke up this morning your hair wasn’t hair anymore.  What was it? What do you do?
  16. Invent a new club. Who can belong and who can’t? How do you make sure it’s fair so you don’t hurt anyone’s feelings?
  17. You have the opportunity to do something secretly nice for someone else. What do you do? Can you keep the secret?
  18. Write a letter of thanks to someone in your life who has made a positive difference to you.
  19. Your backyard just turned into a jungle. What do you do?
  20. What can you do to be a positive influence to someone else?
  21. What is your favorite movie? What would life be like if it were real?
  22. Let’s celebrate! What have you recently accomplished that deserves a pat on the back and a high five?
  23. You’re making your way down the rapids in a raft and you know there’s a waterfall coming up. What do you do?
  24. You wake up to discover you’re a dinosaur. What kind are you and what is your life like now.
  25. Pirates invaded your household! What do they do?
  26. The giant stone heads at Easter Island are said to have walked to their place. How do you think they did this?
  27. What is your favorite subject to learn about and why?
  28. Create a new game to play while traveling long distances in the car. Talk about the rules and any supplies you’ll need.
  29. Create a new constellation in the sky. Talk about it’s story and what shape it is.
  30. You are the king/queen of the castle and it’s under attack. How do you defend your kingdom?
  31. What is the most memorable lesson you’ve learned this month? Talk about what happened and why it made an impact on you.
